Over 1,600 commitments were made at the Forum to support refugees and their host communities, and financial commitments of more than $2.2 billion were announced by governments, the private sector, philanthropist organisations and foundations, and religious organisations. One of the most innovative initiatives was a multi-party commitment to digital protection to help prevent the harmful effects of hate speech, disinformation, and misinformation.
During the inauguration ceremony on the evening of 13 December, the UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award was given to Abdullahi Mire, a journalist and former refugee from Somali who defended the right to education by putting 100,000 books in the hands of children and youth in situations of displacement in Kenya.
Organised every four years by UNHCR, the Global Refugee Forum is one of the biggest international meetings on this topic. Its aim is to promote concrete measures to help reach the goals of the Global Pact on Refugees: ease the pressure on host countries, reinforce the autonomy of refugees, increase access to solutions offered by third-party countries, and improve living conditions in countries of origin.
